Olivia Rodrigo – bad idea right? Lyrics

[Intro]
Hey
-

[Verse 1]
Haven’t heard from you in a couple of months
-
But I’m out right now and I’m all fucked up
-
And you’re callin’ my phone and you’re all alone
-
And I’m sensing some undertone
-
And I’m right here with all my friends
-
But you’re sending me your new address
-
And I know we’re done, I know we’re through
-
But, God, when I look at you
-

[Refrain]
My brain goes, “Ah”
-
Can’t hear my thoughts (I cannot hear my thoughts)
-
Like blah-blah-blah (Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah)
-
Should probably not
-
I should probably, probably not
-
I should probably, probably not
-

[Pre-Chorus]
Seeing you tonight
-
It’s a bad idea, right?
-
Seeing you tonight
-
It’s a bad idea, right?
-
Seeing you tonight
-
It’s a bad idea, right?
-
Seeing you tonight
-
Fuck it, it’s fine
-

[Chorus]
Yes, I know that he’s my ex
-
But can’t two people reconnect?
-
I only see him as a friend
-
The biggest lie I ever said
-
Oh, yes, I know that he’s my ex
-
But can’t two people reconnect?
-
I only see him as a friend
-
I just tripped and fell into his bed
-

[Verse 2]
Now I’m gettin’ in the car, wreckin’ all my plans
-
I know I should stop
-
MV
(Woman on radio: Repeat that Jimmy)
-
(Man on radio: I’ll be there soon, no hitchkers this time)
-
, but I can’t
-
And I told my friends I was asleep
-
But I never said where or in whose sheets
-
And I pull up to your place on the second floor
-
And you’re standing, smiling at the door
-
And I’m sure I’ve seen much hotter men
-
But I really can’t remember when
-

[Refrain]
My brain goes, “Ah”
-
Can’t hear my thoughts (I cannot hear my thoughts)
-
Like blah-blah-blah (Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah)
-
Should probably not
-
I should probably, probably not
-
I should probably, probably not
-

[Pre-Chorus]
Seeing you tonight
-
It’s a bad idea, right?
-
Seeing you tonight
-
It’s a bad idea, right?
-
Seeing you tonight
-
It’s a bad idea, right?
-
Seeing you tonight
-
Fuck it, it’s fine
-

[Chorus]
Yes, I know that he’s my ex
-
But can’t two people reconnect?
-
I only see him as a friend
-
The biggest lie I ever said
-
Oh, yes, I know that he’s my ex
-
But can’t two people reconnect?
-
I only see him as a friend
-
I just tripped and fell into his bed
-

[Bridge]
Oh, yes, I know that he’s my ex
-
Can’t two people reconnect?
-
The biggest lie I ever said
-
I just tripped and fell into his bed
-
My brain goes, “Ah”
-
Can’t hear my thoughts
-
The biggest lie I ever said
-
My brain goes, “Ah”

[Outro]
Thoughts

Olivia Rodrigo – bad idea right? Song Introduction

Following the success of her 2021 debut album "Sour", Olivia Rodrigo decided to continue her collaboration with Dan Nigro for her 19-year-old-themed album "Guts". This album describes the confusion, mistakes, embarrassments, and intense teenage rebellion she experienced throughout the year. The lead single "Vampire" was released on June 30, 2023, and quickly topped charts in multiple countries, including the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

The "Bad Idea Right?" music video, directed by Petra Collins, is a departure from Olivia Rodrigo's usual style. For this project, Rodrigo invited Madison Hu, with whom she previously starred in the Disney show "Bizaardvark", along with Iris Apatow and the rising star in the music scene, Tate McRae, to participate in the MV. In the video, Rodrigo escapes from a party and visits an ex-boyfriend with her friends. In subsequent scenes, she desperately makes her way to her ex-boyfriend's bedroom.

After its release, Olivia posted on Instagram: "'Bad Idea Right?' is now out everywhere! I had so much fun making this song last year in New York with @dan_nigro. We jokingly wrote this chorus, but we loved it so much that we turned it into a full song! I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent creating the MV with my friends @petrafcollins, @madisonhu, @tatemcrae, and @irisapatow. So thrilled it's out. Go listen and watch now!"

Pichfork "Without a doubt, Olivia Rodrigo is one of the finest narrators in the music world. She excels at depicting the 'firsts' in life: first love, first heartbreak. This time, in 'Bad Idea Right?', she comedically explores a moment equally significant in every young person's life: 'the first time rekindling an old flame.'"

From a musical aesthetic perspective, "bad idea right?" retains the qualities of a musical, reminiscent of Lindsay Lohan's early teen musical "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" and its iconic track "Drama Queen (That Girl)". The song is also heavily influenced by the new wave style of The Cars, characterized by the use of synthesizer sounds, and the pop-rock flair of Weezer. Rodrigo delivers a dazzling performance with a seemingly feigned innocence, as indicated in the lyrics, "I just accidentally fell on his bed!"
