NEW JEANS 'Cool With You' MV Meanings, Lyrics Translation | Modern Retelling of Greek Myth Eros

by RosyArts

The popular South Korean girl group NewJeans surprised fans with the release of the new music video for "Cool With You" on July 20th. The video features renowned actor Tony Leung and the lead actress from "Squid Game," Jeong Hae-yun, adding an extra level of excitement. The two movie-like MVs adapt the Greek myth of "Psyche and Eros" (also known as "Cupid and Psyche"), telling the tale of Eros (played by Jeong Hae-yun) who chooses love over divinity (Eros is the Roman counterpart of the god of love, Cupid).

Original Greek Myth – Eros and Psyche

"Eros and Psyche" is a tale from ancient Greek mythology, narrating the love story between Eros, the god of love (known as Cupid in Roman myth), and his human wife Psyche.

A brief summary of the story is as follows:

Psyche is a beautiful human woman whose beauty is so mesmerizing that people mistake her for Venus, the goddess of love (Aphrodite in Greek mythology). This makes Venus jealous. Venus commands her son, Eros, to make Psyche fall in love with the ugliest creature in the world. However, when Eros sees Psyche, he is so moved by her beauty that he accidentally falls in love with her himself.

Eros takes Psyche to his palace and marries her, but he makes her promise not to look at his face. Provoked by her sisters, Psyche breaks the promise and tries to look at his face in the night. When she sees that Eros is a beautiful god, she's so surprised that she drops the lamp oil, which wakes Eros up. Knowing she broke the promise, Eros leaves her.

In order to find Eros again, Psyche agrees to complete a series of difficult tasks proposed by Venus. In the end, with the help of the gods, Psyche completes the tasks, reunites with Eros, and gains the status of a goddess.

Jeong Hae-yun's portrayal of Eros choosing to renounce her divine status for love is an innovative interpretation of the original myth.

Cool With You | MV Introduction

In NewJeans' "Cool With You" MV Side B, the legendary actor Tony Leung, at 61 years old, impressively showcases his acting skills with a striking image of white hair. Leung's appearance lasts only about 10 seconds. He doesn't have any lines, but his facial expressions and unique gaze effectively portray his character.

The MV reinterprets the Greek myth in a modern context and innovates by reversing gender roles. In it, Leung plays Aphrodite, originally a female deity. Jeong Hae-yun, known for her role in Netflix's "Squid Game," plays the male Eros, and the character Psyche is portrayed by male actor Michael Villa. NewJeans appear in the story as if they are guardian angels of the gods.

In the story, Eros (played by Jeong Hae-yun) falls in love with a human at first sight. In the struggle between love and divinity, she chooses to relinquish her godly status and fall in love with Michael Villa. However, just as their love is blooming, Tony Leung (playing Aphrodite) suddenly appears before Jeong Hae-yun, tearing their love apart with a chilling laugh. Upon witnessing the despair of Jeong Hae-yun losing her love, Leung simply responds with a cold laugh and continues his journey.

New Jeans - "Cool With You" Story | Detailed MV Plot

"Cool With You", along with last year's "Ditto", both adopted story continuity across two versions: A and B. The narrative revolves around a fallen love god who is on a quest for true love.

In the opening scene of version A, we see the female lead, played by Jeong Haoyan, entering a company elevator with a young Caucasian woman.

She glances at a man next to her who instantaneously becomes enamored by her, almost as if he’s been struck by lightning. When the elevator doors open, they are passionately kissing, hinting at her role akin to Cupid, a deity of love assisting people in finding romance.

Despite her ability to instigate romantic relationships, she never wears a smile and is always alone, indicating her weariness towards her work.

One day, at a museum, she spots an African American man standing before a Cupid painting and immediately falls deeply in love with him. Despite her attempts to get closer, even sneaking into his bed at night, he, as a mortal, cannot truly see her.

In version B of "Cool With You", the narrative picks up from where version A left off. The love goddess, interpreted by Jeong Haoyan, has transformed into a mortal. She dons a cute dress and appears at the man’s apartment door.

Although the man initially does not recognize her, the two quickly develop a strong emotional connection. They shop together, enjoy a sweet vacation, and he even hangs a portrait of her in his room. Her face finally beams with a smile when she experiences the love she has been longing for. This is the inspiration behind the song "Cool With You".

However, good things don’t last. Her secret eventually gets revealed. On a street, another Venus, played by Tony Leung, suddenly appears behind her lover, casting a spell. The man instantly forgets her and falls for another woman.

The female lead can only watch helplessly as her boyfriend leaves her. In the last scene of the MV, she meets NewJeans in a church - they seem to be the gods overseeing and witnessing everything. As the melody of "Get Up" echoes in her ears, it foreshadows how the story of the next music video will unfold.

[Verse 1: Hyein, Danielle]
You know me like no other
-
다 표현하지 않아도
Even if I don't express everything,
See me like no other (Mm)
-
And I think I like your point of view
-
다시 돌아와도 돼
You can come back again,
I don’t care what other people say
-
놓지 말아봐줘
Please don't let go,
Dreaming of each other
-

[Pre-Chorus: Haerin]
You may be on my mind (Mind)
-
Everyday baby, say you’re mine (Mine)
-
You and me on my mind (Mind)
-
Everywhere, baby, say you’re mine (Mine)
-

[Chorus: Hanni, Haerin]
(It feels)

[Verse 2: Minji, Hyein]
이쯤에서 정말로
Here, for real,
너는 어떤 결말로
What kind of ending will you choose,
가려 해
Are you trying,
What’s the best
-
너의 옆에 내가 있을 때
When I'm by your side,
이런 말이 잘 안 나와
These words are hard to say,
이제 더 말하지 않아도 알아
Even if I don't say anymore, I know,
우리 둘이 만든 거리
The distance that we created,
건너서 여기
Cross over here.

[Pre-Chorus: Danielle, Hanni]
You may be on my mind (Mind)
-
Everyday baby, say you’re mine (Mine)
-
You and me on my mind
-
Everywhere, baby, say you’re mine
-

[Chorus: Haerin, Danielle]
(It feels)
-
Cool with you (너랑)
(With you)
Cool with you (Gotta tell me now)

Cool with you (It’s just)
-
Cool with you (Haha)
